Your Information

Privacy Policy

This policy explains what information Tennessee NORML collects through this website, how it is used, and the choices available to you.

Last updated: September 6, 2026

Information We Collect

We collect only the information needed to operate our advocacy program. That generally means information you choose to give us through a form on this website.

  • Email signup data. Your name and email address when you sign up for updates.
  • Optional profile details. Your ZIP code, the advocacy topics you select, and whether you indicate interest in volunteering. These fields are optional and are used to route alerts and volunteer requests.
  • Mobile numbers. A mobile number if you choose to provide one. A number alone does not enroll you in text messages.
  • SMS consent records. If you affirmatively opt in to text messages, we record your consent status, the date and time of consent, the exact consent language and version shown to you, and the page where you signed up.
  • Message content. Any message you type into a form on this website.
  • Technical information. When you submit a form, our servers may record the IP address and browser user agent associated with the submission, which helps us document consent and prevent abuse.

SMS and Mobile Information

When you opt in to receive text messages from Tennessee NORML, we may collect your mobile number, consent status, consent date and time, signup source, and related messaging records for the purpose of providing the SMS program and documenting consent.

Tennessee NORML does not sell, rent, or share mobile phone numbers or SMS opt-in data with third parties or affiliates for their own marketing or promotional purposes. Mobile information may be shared only with service providers that help us operate the messaging program, and only as necessary to provide those services, comply with law, prevent abuse, or protect rights and safety.

SMS consent is not transferred to unrelated third parties. Consent you give to Tennessee NORML applies only to messages from Tennessee NORML. See our SMS Terms for full program details, including message frequency, rates, STOP, and HELP instructions.

Internal Notifications

When you submit the signup form, the details you provided, together with a separately labeled record of your consent choices, are stored in our database and sent to our internal staff address at support@tnnorml.org. That notification is internal only and is not marketing. Delivery is attempted through our configured email service and the outcome is recorded in our outbox.

Text Message Program Status

Our text message program is not currently active. If you check the optional SMS consent box, we record your consent and hold it without sending messages. Your number is not enrolled with any messaging carrier. Nothing will be sent unless and until the program is approved and launched.

How We Use Information

  • To send email updates, legislative alerts, and event notices
  • To hold consent records for a future text alert program, if and when it launches
  • To document consent for the SMS program
  • To respond to messages and questions you send us
  • To understand overall interest in our advocacy work
  • To protect the site and our systems from abuse

Analytics, Cookies, and Embedded Content

This website is designed to work without advertising trackers. If we add analytics in the future to understand aggregate traffic, we will describe it here. We do not use your personal information for third party advertising.

Our home page embeds a video hosted by YouTube. When that player loads, YouTube receives your IP address and may set its own cookies or similar identifiers, under Google’s privacy policy rather than ours. We do not receive individual viewing data from YouTube.

Our store page is a link out to a third party print on demand storefront. No storefront is embedded or active on this website at this time, and no purchase or payment information is collected here.

Service Providers

We use third party service providers to run this website and our communications, including hosting, database and application infrastructure, email delivery for internal notifications, video hosting for the embedded player, and payment processing for donations. No text messaging provider is in use at this time. These providers necessarily receive the data required to perform those services on our behalf. We do not authorize them to use your information for their own marketing purposes.

Donations are processed by PayPal. Tennessee NORML does not collect or store payment card information on this website.

Security Practices

Signup records are stored in a database that is not publicly readable. Records are written only through our secure server side submission path, and messaging provider credentials are held server side and never exposed in browser code. No system can be guaranteed perfectly secure, and we do not claim otherwise.

Your Choices and Requests

  • Reply STOP to any text message to opt out of SMS
  • Use the unsubscribe option in our emails to stop email updates
  • Email support@tnnorml.org to request access to, correction of, or deletion of the information we hold about you

We may need to verify your request before acting on it, and we may retain certain records where required by law.

Retention

We keep supporter records for as long as needed to run our advocacy program. Consent records for the SMS program, including opt-out records, are retained as long as reasonably necessary to document consent and to make sure that a number that has opted out is not messaged again.

Children

This website is intended for adults. We do not knowingly collect information from children.

Policy Updates

We may update this Privacy Policy. When we do, we will revise the date at the top of this page. Continued use of the website after an update means you accept the revised policy.
